Summary: Leading the Way

Highlights from 2018

The lungs are arguably the most important organ in the body. Humans can survive weeks without food and days without water, but only minutes without oxygen inhaled through the lungs. At National Jewish Health, we know that when you can’t breathe, nothing else matters. That is why we are leading the way to better breathing for all.

9 Second Opinions

  • Anne Tournay’s disease baffled doctors across the country. Our accurate diagnosis and treatment transformed her life.

50+ Living Longer

  • In the 1990s, people with cystic fibrosis (CF) rarely lived past their teen years. Now, thanks to our experts and others, CF patients are living beyond age 50.

58% Students Get More Sleep

  • More than half of high school students are getting eight hours of sleep, thanks to research from Lisa Meltzer, PhD, and others.

4 Years to 4 Days

  • Trained computers only needed four days to evaluate 10,000 CT scans for emphysema, not the four years it took humans.

10% Born Prematurely

  • Leylany, like nearly one out of every 10 babies in America, was born prematurely. Our new post NICU clinic supports their special needs.

300 Genomes Sequenced

  • The Center for Genes, Environment and Health can now sequence 300 genomes at once, so researchers can gain new insights more quickly.

15 Cell Types

  • Researchers sequence RNA to understand how airway progenitor cells develop into 15 different cell types, and how these cells regrow damaged lung tissue.

4 Generations of Philanthropy

  • Edwin Goodman (Bergdorf Goodman) and his family have supported our mission and helped direct the future of care and research for four generations.

$8.9 Million

  • Funding from the National Institutes of Health will allow our researchers to study asthma exacerbations.

133,000 Patient Visits

  • Patients come from all 50 states and around the world for accurate diagnoses; effective, targeted treatments; and compassionate care.
