Mineral Dust & Lung Disease Trial Objective The purpose of this study is to better understand lung diseases that develop from inhaling mineral dust over time. Although the causes of diseases such as "black lung" and silicosis are known, it is not well understood why some people get these diseases and others don't or how stopping exposure to mineral dust may affect the severity of these diseases. This study will be conducted through phone interviews with participants. The information our researchers collect will be used to learn more about lung diseases with workplace exposure to mineral dusts. Enrollment Active Clinical Trials Closed to Recruitment Who Can Participate Adults who have at least five years of United States based work as a miner or who have been exposed to mineral dusts at work such as silica and who have evidence of lung disease due to mineral dust exposures may be eligible to participate. Medical and work history, chest imaging, pulmonary function testing or any available lung tissue specimens will be collected and analyzed. Family members may donate the lung tissue of a deceased relative if it was saved at a hospital or other health care facility. Age: 18+ Gender: Any Gender Estimated Time Commitment Not Specified A 45-minute phone call at beginning of study, with follow-up 30-minute phone interviews every three to five years thereafter. × Payments are intended to compensate the participant for their time and effort during the study. Payments are typically given to the participant at the end of each completed study visit. Reimbursements are intended to compensate the participant for travel-related expenses. They must be approved by the study staff and require you to turn in receipts. Travel reimbursement will vary from study to study.
