The National Jewish Health Otolaryngology (ENT) service is comprised of subspecialty clinical and surgical experts in the areas of Rhinology and Laryngology.

 

Rhinology

Our Rhinologists specialize in the comprehensive medical and surgical management of patients with diseases of the nose and sinuses.

  • Sinusitis – Chronic sinusitis is an inflammation (swelling) of the mucous membranes that line the sinus cavities. Untreated and prolonged sinus inflammation can lead to increased sinus infections or chronic sinus-related symptoms. Poorly controlled sinusitis also can be associated with increased lung inflammation and worsening underlying conditions such as asthma.

  • Nasal polyps – Nasal polyps are small, benign growths from the mucous membranes of the nasal cavity and sinuses and represent the end-point of severe chronic inflammation. They are a common cause of nasal obstruction.

  • Nasal obstruction & Deviated septum – Nasal obstruction is characterized by an irreversible problem that causes blockage of airflow, dryness and stuffiness of the nasal passages. A deviated septum is a condition in which the bone and cartilage that divides the nasal cavity is shifted from midline to one or both sides. 

 

Laryngology

Our Laryngologists provide specialty care and management of patients with voice, airway, and swallowing disorders. This service is also coordinated with a certified Speech-Language Pathologist.

  • Voice – Treatment for voice complaints include, hoarseness, dysphonia, vocal cord paralysis, spasmodic dysphonia, and care of the professional voice.

  • Airway – Narrowing of the larynx and trachea, subglottic and tracheal stenosis, and chronic cough.

  • Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD)/paradoxical vocal fold motion – Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD), also known as Paradoxical Vocal Fold Motion (PVFM), leads to asthma-like symptoms, but these symptoms are a result of an abnormal closing of the vocal cords rather than inflammation of the airways. 

  • Swallowing – Dysphagia is trouble swallowing. Swallowing symptoms may present in many ways, pain, aspiration, gagging and sensation of things being stuck in the throat or chest.
