Plasma (EDTA tube)
This is plasma isolated from whole blood that was collected in tubes coated with EDTA. The EDTA acts as an anticoagulant.
Plasma (Citrate tube)
This is plasma isolated from whole blood that was collected in tubes containing 0.109M, 3.2%, sodium citrate.
Plasma (Heparin tube)
This is plasma isolated from whole blood that was collected in tubes coated with sodium Heparin. The heparin acts as an anticoagulant.
Buffy Coat (EDTA tube)
This is the buffy coat isolated from whole blood that was collected in tubes coated with EDTA. Buffy coat is the thin fraction layer after centrifugation of whole blood that contains the majority of platelets and white blood cells which can be used to isolate DNA.
Buffy Coat (Heparin tube)
This is the buffy coat isolated from whole blood that was collected in tubes coated with Sodium Heparin. Buffy coat is the thin fraction layer after centrifugation of whole blood that contains the majority of platelets and white blood cells which can be used to isolate DNA.
Serum
Serum is isolated from whole blood that was collected in a serum separator tube without any anticoagulants. Everything but the serum (liquid component of blood) is clotted out and separated from the Serum with a physical barrier. Serum contains all the blood proteins, minus the clotting factors present in plasma.
Red Cells (EDTA tube)
These are the Red Blood Cells collected after centrifugation of whole blood that was collected in tubes coated with EDTA.
Blood (ACD tube, 10%DMSO)
This is whole blood that is collected in an ACD tube (Solution B -13.2 g/L trisodium citrate, 4.8 g/L citric acid, 14.7 g/L dextrose). The whole blood is added in a 1:1 ratio with a solution of RPMI growth media/20% DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide). The final concentration of DMSO is 10%.
BAL Supernate (BALF)
This is bronchoalveolar lavage fluid that has been recovered after the raw BAL fluid has been centrifuged to pellet any cells.
BAL Cells in RNAprotect reagent
These are cells that have been pelleted from raw bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, the supernatant removed and the cells resuspended in 200 μl of Qiagen’s RNAprotect Cell Reagent.
BAL Cells Neat
These are cells that have been pelleted from raw bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and the supernatant removed as much as possible. The cells are left as a pellet.
Buccal Cells Neat
These are cheeks cells collected from Pediatric patients only. Initially, the swab is vortexed briefly with RPMI medium or 1x PBS to free the cells from the swab. The solution is then centrifuged to pellet the cells and the supernatant removed. The pellet is stored neat.
