Nocturnal Pulse Oximetry (Outpatient)
Your provider has recommended that you have a nocturnal pulse oximetry done at National Jewish Health Sleep Center. You are scheduled at our Main Campus location in Denver.
Appointment preparation:
- Have one fingernail free of nail polish and/or acrylic nails for the oxygen sensor (any finger except the thumbnail).
- Bring your list of current medications, health insurance card(s), and driver’s license or government-issued ID to the appointment.
On the day of your appointment:
- Please arrive at your scheduled appointment time.
- Allow time to use our valet parking. Inform the valet attendant you are picking up a Sleep Testing device.
- Enter the Center for Outpatient Health (COH) and proceed to the main admissions area.
- Plan to stay for 10 minutes to complete paperwork and receive your nocturnal pulse oximetry device along with instructions. We will demonstrate how to use the equipment.
- You will be given instructions for returning the equipment.
The night of your test:
- Please wear the nocturnal pulse oximetry device for at least 6 hours.
- You will be using the following equipment pieces:
- Recording device attached to a wristwatch to collect data.
- 1 sensor on your finger to detect the amount of oxygen in your blood.
- Sensor should be attached securely, refer to the materials provided to you with all of the testing equipment.
- Follow the instructions for sensor hook-up carefully.
- If you have questions when using the nocturnal pulse oximetry device, please call the Sleep Lab at (303)398-1444.
In the event of an emergency, please contact the emergency services at 911.
Financial information and other items of importance:
If you damage or fail to return the equipment, you will be billed for repair/replacement. This charge can be up to $1600 and is not covered by insurance.
It is your responsibility to understand and know the coverage criteria for your insurance.
Know your deductible and co-pay amounts. The Sleep Center will make every effort to verify your insurance coverage and obtain any needed referrals and/or authorizations for services to be provided by the Sleep Center. However, it is still ultimately your responsibility to understand and know the coverage criteria for your insurance. Prior to receiving any health service, please verify with your insurance that all needed referrals, authorizations and other information has been obtained.
You will be asked to sign the National Jewish Health Consent to Treatment form before your appointment unless you have completed one in the last 12 months. This form does include financial expectations set by National Jewish Health and cannot be altered.
Our sleep technologists will not be able to answer questions regarding your insurance plan or coverage. Please contact your insurance company directly for plan or coverage questions.
National Jewish Health is a fragrance-free, non-smoking facility. Please do not wear perfumes, colognes, aftershave, scented lotions or scented hairspray as these can irritate and increase respiratory symptoms in our patients and care team.

Patient parking is off Colfax Avenue or East 14th Avenue one block west of Colorado Blvd. We have free surface parking and a patient parking garage. The desk for add-on device pick up is located within the Center for Outpatient Health (COH), 4th floor. Scheduled appointment device pick up is located in the Smith Building on the 2nd floor, follow signs to the Sleep Lab.
