Dr. Pia Hauk Named Honorary Chair for Denver Food Allergy Walk

JULY 29, 2014

DENVER, CO — Pia Hauk, MDNational Jewish Health pediatric allergist Pia Hauk, MD, will serve as the Honorary Medical Chair for the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) Walk in Denver on August 9, 2014. The walk brings together children with food allergies and their families to raise money and awareness for food allergy treatment and research. There are roughly 15 million Americans living with food allergies.

Dr. Hauk is a leading expert in pediatric food allergies and a mother of a child with food allergies.

“Part of my job is to provide advice to food-allergic children and their families, but I can personally relate to the fear that often accompanies a food allergy diagnosis,” said Dr. Hauk. “At National Jewish Health we have performed supervised food challenges for decades while taking results of skin and blood tests of food allergic children into account. This allows us to properly diagnose relevant food allergies, determine which foods need to be avoided, and avoid unnecessary elimination diets.”

Dr. Hauk has been a pediatric allergist and immunologist at National Jewish Health since 2006, and has won the institution’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award three times. Additionally, Dr. Hauk has research interests in identifying risk factors that promote the development of atopic diseases. She has authored more than two dozen research papers during her career. Dr. Hauk is a member of the Colorado Allergy and Asthma Society, Clinical Immunology Society, and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

The FARE walk will take place on Saturday, August 9 at Washington Park in Denver. Registration for the event begins at 8 a.m. with the walk beginning at 9 a.m.
