Use the SCOPEX score and Figure 1 to estimate the risk of an exacerbation in the next six months.

Place the SCOPEX score  (       ) at the appropriate point on the x axis of the graph below. The corresponding result on the y axis is the risk (percent chance) of developing a COPD exacerbation in the next six months.
 

The higher the score, the more likely the patient will have a COPD exacerbation in the next six months.


       

 

In order to reduce the risk of a COPD exacerbation, the following commonly employed therapies may be considered: (reference GOLD guidelines and the article cited above)

  • Smoking cessation
  • Vaccination for influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia
  • Medications including long-acting beta-agonists/inhaled steroids, long-acting muscarinic antagonists, long-acting beta agonists, roflumilast, azithromycin
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Collaborative self-management
