Reflujo gastroesofágico ocurre cuando existe un flujo invertido o reflujo del contenido estomacal hacia al esófago. Todos tenemos algo de reflujo. Cantidades anormales de reflujo pueden causar la enfermedad de reflujo gastroesofágico. Eso ocurre cuando la válvula de musculo liso entre el esófago y el estomago no funciona correctamente. Esa banda de musculo se llama el esfínter esofágico inferior.
