Clean Air Campaign: Stayin Alive
Grade 4
Description: Students will learn that air pollution is an environmental change that can affect the survival or extinction of plants and animals. Students will conduct a guided internet search to learn about plant and animal adaptations, including those that provide protection from pollution. Students will share the results of their research. The class will engage in outdoor activities to simulate adaptations that help people survive air pollution.
5 Star Rating:
Likes: There are specific websites outlined by the teachers to guide the student research. The creative assessment at the end of the lesson is a great way to conclude the lesson.
Dislikes: Students do a lot of research, but don’t do much with it. It would be good if they could create some sort of presentation from the research material.
Helpful Hints: Rather than have two large groups, divide the classroom into smaller groups. Decrease the amount of research. Possibly try to pull in other activities and have the PE teacher participate in the game.
Missing Elements: To help below level learners, I would reduce the number of index cards they have to fill out. Also, some mixed ability grouping might help below level learners get trough the research.
Additional Comments: This lesson has a clean focus/objective that follows through the lesson.
5 Star Rating:
Likes: The creative assessment, trackstar and application of knowledge are great.
Dislikes: The rubric needs to be improved with student examples.
Helpful Hints:
Missing Elements: Student work examples.
Additional Comments: Exceeds standards bar is too low. Move participated to meets standards and take the activity grade out of (5 activities X 3 possible points) 15. Extra points can be earned for truly exceeding standards.
