Clean Air Projects

Clean Air Campaign: Air Pollution 101

Grades: 9-12

Description: Students will gain background knowledge of the basic sources of air pollution, along with an overview of how air pollution affects our health, out environment, and our economy.  The class will participate in a hands on discussion to visually understand the impact their choices have on air pollution.  Students will complete a worksheet detailing a description of each pollutant.

5 Star Rating:

Likes: The striking visual aspect that relates concepts to your daily life.

Dislikes: The lesson needs to incorporate more Colorado problems such as ozone.

Helpful Hints:  Rather than the worksheet, encourage them to take notes on each.  Also, think about why charcoal and cocoa were used rather than food coloring for some pollutants. Have students look into each pollutant (1 per student and report back.)

5 Star Rating:

Likes: I liked the real-world importance and related learning.  I like how students could use and apply their research through a role play activity.

Dislikes:  I didn’t like how there seemed to be a lack of student-inquiry, especially in the introductory phase of the lesson.

Helpful Hints: N/A

Missing Elements? I would add an element of student-directed learning or student inquiry having students rotate through 7 stations per major pollutant, prior to the activity.
