World TB Day 2017

Each year, we recognize World TB Day on March 24. This annual event commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discoveries of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB).

National Jewish Health has been serving the global TB community since we opened in 1899.  Our Mycobacteriology Laboratory serves almost a 1,000 hospitals, clinics, public health laboratories and research teams with our 24/7 service identifying Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and its species, MDR and XDR-TB strains ruled in/out within 12 to 24 hours, full MIC antimicrobial susceptibility testing, accepting cerebrospinal fluid specimens and formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissue blocks for diagnosing TB and measuring therapeutic drug levels for TB patients.

In addition, over the last two years our Mycobacteriology laboratory has supported the global TB research community, with full speciation and susceptibility testing on over 2,000 samples from Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America.  Our Mycobacteriology laboratory is a proud member of the TB research and clinical community, promoting global health and awareness around the world! Eliminating TB is possible – join us in this endeavor!
