Precipitin Aspergillus fumigatus #1 IgG
Test Code
ASPF1
Description
Precipitating antibodies against dust, fungal, animal and other protein antigens are detected by a double immunodiffusion Ouchterlony technique. This technique is often used to identify precipitating antibodies in a patient's serum to environmental antigens which may give rise to hypersensitivity pneumonitis. In addition, patients with aspergilloma and allergic aspergillosis can have detectable precipitating antibodies to Aspergillus fumigatus. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis, an inflammation of the alveoli of the lung, initially presents with symptoms similar to the flu. If caught early and exposure to the antigen is ceased, the condition can be reversed. Long term exposure, however, causes scarring of the lungs and difficulty breathing.

Interpretation
Precipitating IgG antibodies are often present in serum of patients with hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) due to exposure to enviromental antigens. The serum precipitin test assists in the diagnosis of HP.
