Description
Urine protein electrophoresis (SPE) is an analytical technique that provides separation of serum protein into six fractions: Albumin, Alpha-1, Alpha-2, Beta-1, Beta-2, and Gamma. Interpretation of elevation, decreased, or visual change in different fractions can be used as a diagnostic aid for a variety of different disease states and protein abnormalities, including monoclonal gammopathies (MG).
Collect
Collect a 24 hour urine sample.
Pediatric Collection
Collect a 24 hour urine sample. Pour off at least 15 mL of urine into a labeled specimen cup. Note original total volume on label.
Unacceptable Conditions
Random urine sample is unacceptable.
Storage Transport Temp
Frozen. Send urine specimen container Priority Overnight via FedEx and in a well insulated container on dry ice. Note original total volume on label.
Stability
Frozen samples are stable for one month. Samples stored at 2 to 8°C are stable for one week.
Notes
24 hour urine is the only acceptable sample type.
Prefer to receive entire 24 hour urine container rather than a poured off specimen.
