Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody

Test Code

ANCA

Description

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a rare, systemic, autoimmune vascular disease characterized by inflammation in small and medium sized blood vessels and by necrotizing granulomas primarily in the respiratory tract and kidneys. Antibodies that bind to cytoplasmic antigens in human neutrophils (ANCA) are useful serologic markers of GPA. ANCA have classically been divided into c-ANCA (cytoplasmic) and p-ANCA (perinuclear) patterns depending on the immunofluorescence patterns observed when patient serum is added to microscope slides coated with neutrophils.
