Resources & Services

The Lahm lab is located on the 10th floor (K1007 & K1011) of the Goodman building. The lab is fully equipped to perform translational animal studies as well as mechanistic cell biology and molecular biology experiments.

Our laboratory is studying:

  • mechanisms of how sex hormones such as 17β-estradiol affect lung and RV endothelial cell homeostasis as well as cardiomyocyte function during PH and RV failure development
  • mechanisms of how estrogen receptor alpha promotes resilience to maladaptive RV remodeling by regulating angiogenesis, contractile signaling and inflammatory processes
  • mechanisms of hypoxia-induced lung vascular and RV remodeling in the perinatal period and throughout the lifespan
  • mechanisms of how androgens modulate airway epithelial cell function in severe asthma
  • neurohormonal signaling in the RV
  • exercise effects on RV function
  • novel PH phenotypes in the veteran population

Specialized Techniques

  • Sugen/hypoxia, monocrotaline, chronic hypoxia, and pulmonary artery banding models of PH and RV failure
  • Advanced hemodynamic assessment in rodents, including pressure-volume (P-V) loop measurements
  • Ex vivo isolated perfused heart (Langendorff model) studies
  • Isolation of primary pulmonary artery endothelial cells, RV endothelial cells and RV cardiomyocytes from rodents with or without PH
  • In vivo and in vitro hypoxia studies in rodents and cultured cells, respectively

Specialized Equipment

  • In vivo and in vitro hypoxia chambers for rodents and cell culture studies, respectively
  • Advanced hemodynamic assessment station with PowerLab software
  • Langendorff set-up for ex vivo isolated perfused heart studies
  • IonOptix calcium signaling system

Training & Job Opportunities

Our lab is open to graduate students, postdocs and clinical fellows with an interest in the study of pulmonary hypertension, right ventricular failure, and sex biases in cardiopulmonary diseases. Our lab is also open to collaborators with an interest in these areas.
