Primary Investigator

Peck Ong headshotOur participating physician, Peck Ong, MD, is a physician at our hospital and assistant professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.

Ong trained in allergy medicine with Donald Leung, MD, PhD, ADRN, Principal Investigator, at National Jewish Health in Denver from 1999-2002. As part of Leung’s research team, Ong showed that atopic dermatitis patients have a low level of a natural skin antibiotic called defensin that may explain why they are more prone to skin infections. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine and remains one of the most cited studies in atopic dermatitis research.

Ong has been at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles since 2004, where he developed an atopic dermatitis program that treats children with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis. His research interests are geared toward solving clinical problems including Staphylococcus aureus skin infections, food allergies, development of asthma and differential diagnosis of atopic dermatitis.

He has served on various national committees on atopic dermatitis including the Atopic Dermatitis Work Group for the American Medical Association, the Eczema Committee for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the Dermatological Allergy Committee for the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
