Electronic Lab Notebooks
An Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) is a digital tool that replicates the functionality of a traditional paper lab notebook, allowing users to enter protocols, observations, notes, and other data via a computer or mobile device.
Benefits of ELNs
ELNs are superior to paper notebooks for managing research data and enabling collaboration!
- Better Organization and Accessibility: ELNs allow experiments, data and notes to be systematically organized
- Improved collaboration: ELNs enable seamless collaboration between researchers
- Enhanced compliance: ELNs help maintain compliance with NIH DMSP requirements and best practices, and institutional policies.
Selecting an ELN
NJH does not currently offer a central ELN solution, however there are many options available. With careful planning and implementation, ELN implementation can improve efficiency and compliance in the lab!
- Identify Lab Needs: Identify your lab’s specific needs such as data type, collaboration, compliance, and budget.
- Evaluate Options: Make a table listing all ELN platforms and their features for easy comparison.
- Evaluate Cost: Consider license fees, maintenance, support costs over the lifespan.
- IST Security Approval: An IST security review and approval is a critical step to selecting and using an ELN. Privacy review might also be required.
