Each of the following areas is scored according to the scale below.

 

Epiglottis, False Cords and Arytenoids

Edema
  • Normal: 0
  • Mild :1
  • Moderate: 2
  • Severe: 3
Erythema/Hyperemia
  • Normal: 0
  • Mild: 1
  • Moderate: 2
  • Severe: 3
Posterior Commissure and Piriform Recess
  • Normal: 0
  • Abnormal: 2

 

Calculating the SGI

The SGI is calculated by adding the score of each of the five areas. The score can range from 0-22.

1. Epiglottis
  • Edema: 0-3
  • Erythema/Hyperemia: 0-3
2. False Cords
  • Edema: 0-3
  • Erythema/Hyperemia: 0-3
3. Arytenoids
  • Edema: 0-3
  • Erythema/Hyperemia: 0-3
4. Piriform Recess
  • 0 or 2
5. Posterior Commissure
  • 0 or 2
 

 

Severity Based on the SGI

The severity of upper airway irritation can range from normal to severe, depending on the total SGI score.

  • Normal: 0 - 4
  • Mild: 5 - 9
  • Moderate: 10 - 16
  • Severe: 17 - 22
