Child Psychiatry Consultation

NJH for kids logoConsultation with a child psychiatrist is available either through self-referral from the patient or family or through referrals from the patient's doctor or therapist.  Common reasons for referral include questions about diagnosis and treatment.  One common goal of consultation is to help families weigh the risks and benefits of various treatments including talk therapy, behavior therapy, medications, herbs, supplements, nutrition and lifestyle interventions.

The psychiatry consultation service also has expertise in mind body interactions as well as integrative/holistic options for your child.  For example, our service can help when symptoms of a medical illness worsen because of stress and/or lack of sleep.  In this case, we often make recommendations for improving the restorative nature of sleep through sleep hygiene and non-pharmacologic agents whenever possible.

Consultations are also available regarding potential interactions between medicines prescribed for medical illness and emotions, as well as potential interactions between psychotropic medicines and both prescribed and over-the-counter medicines.
