When he arrived at the hospital, Gerald Short couldn’t breathe. Heavy fluid had filled his chest, and his heart was enlarged and beating irregularly. Now, Short is able to say that he’s feeling great. “I figure they saved my life.”
In December, National Jewish Health and Saint Joseph Hospital were able to launch the first formal ECMO Program in the SCL Health system. This specialized bypass machine offers lifesaving time to patients whose heart or lungs aren’t stable enough to function on their own.
