Collect
Submit a slant or at least = 2.0 mL of a broth culture. Specify the type of media used.
Unacceptable Conditions
Non-viable organisms
Mixed cultures
There will be an additional charge for purification/isolation of cultures containing a contaminant, or more than one mycobacterial species.
Organisms submitted on a plate are not acceptable.
Organisms for AST testing without identification
Identification must be provided for isolates when “AST only” is ordered. If identification is not provided, identification testing will be performed and billed accordingly.
Storage Transport Temp
Room Temperature
Notes
MIC testing on slowly growing nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) performed using microtiter dilution methodology.
Refer to Interpretive Data section for list of drugs concentrations and interpretations.
Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) performed on NTM isolates by request only.
Per ATS/IDSA statement: Diagnosis, treatment and prevention of nontuberculous mycobacterial diseases (2007), M. gordonae is frequently encountered in the environment and is almost always considered nonpathogenic; therefore, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) for M. gordonae is performed by specific request only. Contact NJH Mycobacteriology laboratory at 303.398.1339 if AST is desired for M. gordonae.
