One bottle per patient draw site. One bottle is sufficient for both aerobic and anaerobic culture.
Preferred volume: 10mL
Sterilize venipuncture by cleaning with 70% alcohol, rubbing skin in a circular motion, starting at venipuncture site and moving outward. Follow with a 1-2% providone-iodine solution, applying with a similar circular motion. Let area dry before stick.
Patients with iodine sensitivity- disinfect with 2 washings of alcohol.
Intermittent bactermia, such as occurs with abscesses or septic involvement, will have maximum # of circulating organisms occurring about one hour before chills or fever spikes. Two blood cultures should be obtained from different sites approximately at one hour intervals. Microbiology lab must notified if blood cultures must be held longer to recover fastidious organisms.
Minimum volume: 2mL
Frozen or refrigerated blood culture bottles.
Room temperature only. Transport to lab within 2 hours.
If unable to transport to lab immediately, can be held at RT until next day.
