A colonoscopy allows the doctor to look inside the colon, the lower portion of the GI tract and that is about 5 feet long. Your doctor will use a small flexible tube to do a visual inspection of the inside of your colon and may also do a biopsy and remove any polyps (small growths) found inside your colon during the procedure.
