Clinical Interests

My clinical interest is in evaluating and caring for patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) of any cause. Aryeh Fischer, MD (Division of Rheumatology and Co-Director of the Autoimmune Lung Center) and I co-run a clinical research lab whose goal is to explore interesting and important clinical questions regarding ILD, including ILD related to connective tissue disease. The global focus of my individual research program is on how patients live with and experience ILD, how we assess that experience, and how we, as caretakers, might improve quality of life in patients suffering from ILD. I have a particular interest in developing and investigating so-called patient-reported outcomes (PRO) in ILD. These are instruments designed to capture patients' perceptions of what life is like with ILD and are used to assess whether and how therapeutic interventions affect patients.

*Dr. Swigris seems very concerned about how you are feeling.

Dr. Swigris has only been an excellent provider, physician, guider and helper, he has pointed me in the right direction for what is to come. I am at "end stage", lymphangioleiomyomatosis. He has directed me to palliative care and hospice services. He referred me to nurse practitioner, Browyn Long, who has been extremely helpful in guiding me through this process.

I went to DR Swigris, for a self-paid consultation for [condition]. Meeting with Jeffery was well worth the time and expense of doing so. He explained in detail, not only how the disease functioned but how it was attacking my lungs, in terms my wife and I could understand. Kaiser had done some of the same but not in one sitting with my [test] out and used for my education. Jeffery within an hour gave my underlying condition a name, and recommended aggressive treatment plan. For this I will be eternally grateful, I have been waiting 7 months for this type of information from Kaiser. I feel Kaiser was doing most of the correct things but didn't know why, and was taking a wait and see approach that may have led to a recurrence in December. I also understand that there is the possibility of recurrences in the future, but feel this one may have been avoidable. Today based on DR Swigris's input to Kaiser, I have begun Infusion therapy, and Kaiser has totally accepted Jeffery's diagnoses and treatment plan. It would seem they were also in need of a fresh set of eyes, and a better definition of my disease. I understand that my disease is rare; however it is not unheard of and feel Kaiser should have taken advantage of the knowledge base at NJH, on their own. My consultation with DR Swigris was more than I could hope for, my family and I are hopeful the treatment he has directed will return my life back to as normal a condition as possible. He made no promises of complete recovery, given the scarring in my lungs but provided the hope that I could get off of [treatment] in the future. Maybe I'll move to Florida to make up the difference!
