The Big Idea: Prevention of Pediatric Allergies and Asthma

Allergies continue to impact the health of millions of children and adults. Dr. Pamela L. Zeitlin will discuss new theories and research at National Jewish Health towards preventing childhood allergies. Also covered will be treatment development in the allergic march – the progression from atopic dermatitis to food allergies and asthma. THE IDEA: From the day we are born, our skin, gut, and lungs are open to the atmosphere. Breakdowns in the barrier cells lining these tissues can allow allergens and toxins entry to the bloodstream where immune cells can be recruited to respond. Often this leads to inflammation and allergies. The Atopic March describes the evolution beginning in infancy from eczema to food allergy, acid reflux (GERD) or EOE to asthma.
