Trial Objective

The purpose of the study is to obtain information on if Metoprolol, a commonly prescribed heart medication, can reduce the frequency and severity of COPD flare-ups.

Who Can Participate

Participation involves 10 visits to the research clinic and 10 phone visits over one year. Medication and testing (heart and lung) provided at no cost.


Qualifications include:

  • Male or female age 40-85

  • Antibiotic or steroid use for COPD flare-up within past year OR

  • On oxygen for more than 12 hours per day
