Reaching Out to the World

The influence of National Jewish Health extends well beyond the borders of our country. Every year, dozens of faculty travel to foreign countries, sharing their expertise at medical conferences, providing care for the underserved, training physicians and more. Below are a few examples of faculty who have reached out to those in need around the world.

  • Infectious disease specialist Carlos Perez-Velez, MD, spent a month in Colombia leading a research program seeking to improve the diagnosis of tuberculosis in children and slow the spread of drug-resistance.
  • In early 2009, Ronald Balkissoon, MD, spent two weeks providing intense pulmonary training for the medical residents in Rwanda.
  • Ali Musani, MD, demonstrates an advanced bronchoscope at an interventional pulmonology and lung cancer course organized by Singapore General Hospital.
  • The world also comes to National Jewish Health. These North Korean doctors, posing with Leonid Heifets, MD, (second from right) Director of the Mycobacteriology Laboratory, learned how to set up effective programs for diagnosing and treating tuberculosis.
  • Richard Meehan, MD, served for seven months in Iraq with the U.S. Navy. Community Medical Engagements, such as the one above, were conducted to provide local medical care and promote good will between Iraqis and Coalition Forces.
  • Joshua Solomon, MD, (right) established a mobile clinic in rural Vietnam to care for patients, and works to educate local doctors to improve their skills.
