Description

We are delighted to announce the Fourteenth Annual Respiratory Disease Young Investigators’ Forum, which will take place October 11-14, 2018 in Washington, DC. This Forum is a unique educational opportunity  designed for pulmonary, allergy and immunology fellows and junior faculty who are in their first few years in an academic role.

The goals of this program are to facilitate mentoring relationships with expert faculty in respiratory medicine, expand connections to peer investigators, improve the quality of scientific investigation and enhance the communication and presentation of associated research findings.

Submissions are encouraged from US-based Fellows (MDs, DOs) currently enrolled in a pediatric, pulmonary, allergy and immunology fellowship program and/or physicians who have transitioned from fellowship to an academic role in the past 2 years and are conducting research on airway diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary vascular disease, lung transplant, allergic rhinitis, genetics of airway diseases, or bronchiectasis, in either pediatric or adult  populations.

Throughout the Forum, attendees will enjoy opportunities to meet and interact with expert faculty and peer researchers. Opportunities to meet with specific expert faculty during scheduled meals will be available. Along with scientific presentations from the Young Investigators, expert faculty will provide several presentations over the course of the Forum on topics highly relevant to developing a career as a physician scientist.

Topics may include:

  • Career development (K) awards

  • Applying for other grants while working towards (K) awards

  • Finding and negotiating your first job as a physician-scientist

  • Transition from fellow to junior faculty

  • Review effective grant and scientific writing

  • How to write and submit effectively to high-impact publications


Eligible candidates are invited to submit an abstract of their research (clinical or basic science) to a panel
of expert faculty for review. Abstracts will be blinded and scored by the expert faculty. Based on these
scores, the top 30 abstracts are accepted (15 clinical research and 15 basic science research). It should
be noted that the final selection of abstracts is based on the quality of the research and the number of
abstracts received in each category.

At the forum, the 30 fellows will present their research in podium format and expert faculty will evaluate
their presentations and score them on specified criteria. Selected winners will be awarded a grant, as
outlined below, to support their future research endeavors in respiratory medicine.

This Forum has been a successful program for the past 13 years. Previous participants indicate that it
is one of the best programs they have attended because of its focus on research, interaction with other
young investigators, and the mentorship that is provided by world renowned experts in respiratory
medicine.

As the leading respiratory hospital, National Jewish Health is committed to growing young scientists to
become leaders in the research and treatment of respiratory diseases, and is excited to be sponsoring
this important forum.

During the Forum, additional group discussions with expert faculty will be planned. At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify new areas of respiratory research that offer new inroads to effective therapies and treatment

  • Discuss research study designs that may improve on current approaches to respiratory research

  • Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of the research presented and incorporate peer/expert feedback effectively to enhance data presentations

  • Review key strategies for career development as a physician scientist

  • Describe overall process and important components of securing grants to support research

Program Information

Abstract Submission Deadline Extended:
All abstracts must be received by Noon PST, June 26, 2018. Submit abstracts via email to abstracts@njhealth.org.

Eligibility:

  • US-based pulmonary, allergy, and/or immunology Fellows (MDs and DOs), with or without PhD degrees, involved in research related to airway diseases such as asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, or bronchiectasis in pediatrics/adult are eligible.

  • Fellows enrolled in basic or clinical research programs during the 2017-2018 academic year. Young investigators transitioning to initial faculty positions in the last 2 years are especially encouraged to participate.

  • PhD-only research Fellows are not eligible.

  • Candidates must be based in the United States (training must be completed at a US-based institution).

  • All work must be unpublished original research in an area related to lung diseases. Publication as an abstract alone does not preclude eligibility; however, an abstract will not be accepted if it has been published as an article before October 1, 2018. Abstracts/papers to be presented at future medical meetings are eligible for submission.

Abstracts: Policies and Procedures:
Only 1 abstract submission per young investigator will be accepted. Abstracts must conform exactly to the abstract preparation instructions. Those that do not may be rejected. No revisions to submitted abstracts will be accepted. Only original work done by the young investigator will be accepted.

Selection Process:
Submission deadline is Noon PST, on Tuesday, June 26, 2018. Irina Petrache, MD and the expert faculty will review all submissions. All accepted abstracts will be published in a program workbook. The publication of this workbook will not preclude publication or presentation elsewhere. Presentations will be podium format and will consist of a formal presentation and question-and-answer period.

Finalists:
The 30 finalists (authors of accepted abstracts) will be provided with the following: One (1) roundtrip, economy-class ticket from their city of origin to Washington, DC. Reimbursement for ground transfers to and from the program hotel in Washington, DC. 3 nights’ lodging (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) at the program hotel. All group buffet meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) for the duration of the program.

Awards:
An awards ceremony will be held on Saturday evening, October 13, 2018, at which the award winners in each of the 2 categories (basic science and clinical) for first prize ($2000/recipient), second prize ($1500/recipient), and third prize ($1000/recipient) will be announced.

Instructions for Abstract Preparation and Submission

Identification:
Your submission MUST include the following information:

  • Full Name, degree(s)

  • Mailing address (no PO Boxes)

  • Daytime telephone, fax, pager, e-mail address,

  • Current institution

  • Previous institution (where research was conducted, if applicable)

  • Year of fellowship (1, 2, 3) or year 1 or 2 as faculty

  • Study type: basic science or clinical research

Format:

Title and Author:
Abstracts should consist of a brief title (bold, Initial Capitals) descriptive of the research. Include first and last names and degrees of the authors. Underline the presenting author’s name and list the name and location of the institution where research was completed. Do not identify authors in the body of the abstract.

Text:
Abstract text must be 500 words or fewer. Sans serif font (such as Arial or Helvetica) is preferred. Do not use font sizes smaller than 10 point.

Figures and Tables:
Please make sure all figures are high resolution (at least 300 dpi).No more than a total of 4 figures and/or tables per submission are permitted. Please limit figures to 1 graph or image each (ie, no multiple-part figures). All figures will be printed in black and white. Please keep this in mind and adjust your figures and legends accordingly. Legends should be included with figures and are not included in the 500-word limit; figures should be embedded in the abstract file and not included as separate e-mail attachments.

Content:
Organize the body of the abstract in the following manner:

  1. Disclosure of relevant financial relationships (not included in word count).

  2. A sentence stating the purpose of the study, unless stated in the title

  3. A brief statement of methods, if pertinent.

  4. A summary of results

  5. A statement of conclusions reached. It is not satisfactory to state, “The results will be discussed.”

All identification information listed herein MUST be included at the top of your abstract. Abstracts that do not have complete identification information may not be accepted. The subject line of your e-mail must read: “Your Last Name, YIF2018.” Submission deadline is Noon PST, on Tuesday, June 26, 2018.

Notification:

  • Abstract Receipt: Notification of abstract receipt will be provided to you via e-mail.

  • Abstract Acceptance: Notification of abstract acceptance or rejection will be provided to you via e-mail in July 2018.
