The Center for Genes, Environment, and Health is dedicated to understanding the genetic basis of diseases that are common in patients cared for at National Jewish Health. The Center builds on the scientific and clinical strengths at National Jewish Health by developing programs to understand how genes work in biological systems, how genetic variants contribute to the development of disease, and why individuals with the same disease have very different results due to the treatment. These approaches will enable clinicians to develop innovative approaches to disease prevention, early diagnosis and personalized therapeutic intervention.
Areas of Research
-
Integrated genomic technology: develop and apply novel approaches for genetic and genomic analyses, including genome sequencing, genotyping (focused and genome wide), expression microarrays, and epigenetic analyses.
-
Bioinformatics and computational biology:
provide support and advance the science of bioinformatics and computational analyses of complex genomic data from microorganisms to plants to humans.
-
Genetic epidemiology: establish scientific programs that investigate the genetic and genomic etiology of disease in human populations.
Comparative genomics: use complementary biological systems (such as yeast, worms, flys, zebrafish, and rodents) to discover genes that cause complex human diseases.
-
Epigenetics: investigate the importance of epigenetic mechanisms (DNA methylation, histone modification, and non-coding RNA effects on gene silencing) on the development and progression of immune mediated conditions, infectious diseases, and lung diseases.
-
Genomic medicine: bring the products of genomic research to the practice of personalized medicine.
Equipment and Applications
Center for Genes, Environment, and Health has the capability to run various platforms for automated DNA/RNA purification, medium throughput genotyping, gene expression, capillary DNA sequencing and next-generation sequencing. Our instruments allow flexibility and can accommodate both small and large genetics research projects.
