How to Order the Test

Clinical Background

The inability to rapidly identify respiratory infections has been one of the most significant barriers to appropriate and cost effective care of individuals. In general, 70 percent of respiratory infections are viral, while 30 percent are bacterial. However, as little as 25 percent of viral lower respiratory tract infections are diagnosed. Growing evidence also implicates viral respiratory infections as the predominant risk factor associated with exacerbations of both asthma and COPD.

Advanced Diagnostic Laboratories (ADx) offers a comprehensive panel of clinically important viruses by PCR and array detection. The respiratory virus panel includes detection of 16 pathogen analytes:

 FluA  Coronavirus 229E
 FluB  Coronavirus NL63
 PIV 1
 Coronavirus OC43
 PIV 2
 Coronavirus HKU1
 PIV 3
 RSV A
 PIV 4  RSV B
 Rhinovirus and Enterovirus  HMPV
Adenovirus B  Bocavirus

How the Respiratory Virus Panel is Used

  • To guide diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in patients with respiratory viruses in the differential diagnosis of viral vs. bacterial infection
