ADx Specimen Submission Policies

Packaging and shipping of diagnostic specimens by US mail should be in compliance with current CDC regulations. Packaging and shipping by private carrier should be in compliance with current IATA guidelines. For specific shipping concerns, contact the specific Laboratory.

Animal Specimens
Animal specimens are accepted for testing. Please contact the appropriate Laboratory for clarification. Animal specimens must comply with the same shipping instructions as human specimens.

Dry Ice Frozen Shipments
The exterior package must be marked with labeling and documentation indicating dry ice packaging.

Glass Tubes
Glass tubes may be used but must be well packaged to avoid breakage and or leakage. Glass tubes must not be used for frozen specimens.

Human Material
Place in a watertight primary receptacle, then in a secondary watertight receptacle with an absorbent packing material between the primary and secondary receptacles. Exterior packaging should be strong corrugated fiberboard, metal or plastic.

Improperly Labeled Specimen
National Jewish Health will not accept any specimen that is not properly and completely identified. We must have: patient name, date of birth, sex, social security number, ordering entity name, phone number, address, fax number and contact name.

Infectious Substances
Any material that is known or suspected of causing infectious disease should be packaged according to the Infectious Substance Shipping Guidelines of either the CDC (for US mail) or the IATA (for private courier). Needles: National Jewish Health will not accept or test any specimen with an attached needle.

Overseas Shipments
Samples from overseas must be packaged appropriately with paperwork correctly prepared and submitted to ensure timely delivery. To assure timely handling of such specimens by Advanced Diagnostic Laboratories (ADx) at National Jewish Health, please notify us of overseas shipping at the time of shipping.

Temperature Requirements
Each assay offered by National Jewish Health specifies a specific temperature transport requirement. Please refer to the specific test in our catalogue for the necessary requirement.
