Exempt Review

Research that qualifies for exempt review is a type of human subject research and should not be confused with a non-human subject determination. Exempt research requires review but does not require ongoing oversight by the IRB.

There are two processes for submission of exempt research depending on whether the study will involve contact with human subjects in person or by any medium (email, internet).

  1. If there will be no contact with human subjects in person or through any medium (email, internet, brochures, surveys, etc), follow the procedure for submitting research involving only data or specimens.
  2. If there is contact with subjects through any medium, follow the process below.
