  • /app/files/public/5406/pdf-MF---Alpha1-Antitrypsin.pdf Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Inherited Emphysema) Show Details
    Description
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD for short is a lung disease that affects millions of people each year. COPD is a general term used to describe diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. In emphysema there is damage to the walls of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. The earliest symptom of emphysema is shortness of breath during activity. Later the shortness of breath can occur at rest also. Most cases of emphysema are caused by smoking or other environmental factors. There is growing evidence that genetics can also increase the risk of developing emphysema.

  • /app/files/public/5168/pdf-Inhaling-Medication-with-an-MDI.pdf Inhaled Medication With A Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI) Show Details
    Description
The metered dose inhaler (MDI) consists of a pressurized canister of medication in a plastic case with a mouthpiece. Pressing the MDI releases a mist of medication. When inhaled correctly, the medication has a better chance to reach the small airways. This increases the medication's effectiveness. Its portable size, efficiency and convenience make the MDI a desirable method for inhalation treatment.

  • /app/files/public/5833/pdf-Whats-New-with-MDIS.pdf Metered Dose Inhalers: The HFA Propellant Show Details
    Description
The metered dose inhaler (MDI) was developed in the 1950 s. The propellant used in MDIs until recently contained CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons). You may find when you replace your MDI that a different propellant is used in the inhaler. This is an HFA (hydrofluoroalkane) propellant.

  • /app/files/public/5541/pdf-Oxygen-Therapy.pdf Oxygen Therapy Show Details
    Description
Oxygen is in the air we breathe and is necessary to live. When we breathe in, oxygen enters the lungs and it goes into the blood. When the lungs cannot transfer enough oxygen into the blood, an oxygen therapy program may be necessary. The major reason why oxygen therapy is used is to assure that there is enough oxygen in the blood to provide for the body's needs.

  • /app/files/public/5808/pdf-Using-A-Diskus.pdf Using A Diskus® Show Details
    Description
A Diskus® consists of a plastic device containing powdered medication. A Diskus is breath activated. This means when you inhale, the Diskus automatically releases the medication. When inhaled correctly, the medication has a better chance to reach the small airways. This increases the medication's effectiveness. The portable size, efficiency and convenience make the Diskus a desirable method for inhalation treatment.
