Division of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics

The Division of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at National Jewish Medical and Research Center is dedicated to the reliable compilation, accurate analysis, and effective dissemination of clinical and research information to benefit the prevention and treatment of respiratory, allergic, and infectious diseases.

In that effort, the Division fulfills a number of statistical research and educational support functions:

  • Collaborates with clinical and basic science researchers to design, analyze, and present study results.
  • Develops consistent and reliable procedures for the capture, management, and control of study data.
  • Licenses and supports packages for database management and statistical analysis methodologies.
  • Offers general classes in statistical concepts and methods.
  • Assists researchers with protocol development and review through the National Jewish satellite of the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) at the University of Colorado Denver.

The Division of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at National Jewish provides expertise in the design and analysis of clinical trials for investigator-initiated protocols. The Data Coordinating Center (DCC), a key component of the Division, operates under Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) developed in conformance with Food and Drug Administration regulations and Good Clinical Practice guidelines. The DCC collects data and manages research information using Cardiff® TeleForm® technology as well as its own copyrighted Study Designer/Manager© system. Both state-of-the-art software packages create paper- or Web-based data collection forms. They also verify, process, and store submitted data forms in an accessible database.

The range of services furnished by the Division of Biostatistics in support of clinical studies include:

  • Study Design and Management
The Division excels in the creation and accumulation of relevant study criteria. Factors such as sample size, randomization schemes and compliance requirements are taken into account in the design and execution of any study.
  • Data Management and Analysis
Study data are easily captured via a number of input methods, then compiled in compliance with federal regulations. Ongoing monitoring of assimilated information assures the integrity and relevance of the collected data while maintaining patient confidentiality. Any trends and differences are taken into account in the final analysis.
  • Practice Considerations
Utilization and economic analyses can be examined to determine potential cost-saving measures in the care of affected patients. Further studies can verify the effectiveness of these indicators.
  • Education
Proper education is a critical element of any study. Research and operational staff can be trained in the implementation of a study to ensure accurate data collection. The Division can also assist in the reliable interpretation and clear presentation of study results using graphs, tables, and reports specifically prepared for a particular audience.
