We are committed to improving patient care, and this new system helps facilitate communication among healthcare providers and ensure accuracy of patient data.

What is an Electronic Medical Record (EMR)?

An EMR (also known as Electronic Health Record, or EHR) is a medical record that is stored digitally in a secure computer database. This system of storing medical records is an alternative to traditional, paper medical records and has the potential to improve healthcare.

What are the benefits of using an EMR system?

Healthcare is a complex and critical system, so it is important that healthcare providers have access to their patients' medical records immediately, right at the point of care. An EMR allows those involved in your healthcare at National Jewish to instantly view your records from a secure database. Other benefits of an EMR include:

• Better communication between your healthcare providers
• Increased security of your medical records
• Improved accuracy of data and faster access to your prescriptions

What are some of the disadvantages of traditional, paper charts?

• Only one person at a time can view a paper chart.
• Some handwriting may be illegible in a paper chart.
• Paper charts can be difficult to keep track of and they can become disorganized.
• Paper charts take up a lot of physical space and are not environmentally friendly.

What changes will I notice during my appointment at National Jewish?

Your physician will use a computer in your exam room to check medical information and enter notes, prescriptions, referrals and other information. Also, your physician may be assisted in the exam room by other medical staff while initially using the new EMR system.

Should I be concerned about privacy and confidentiality?

Your medical records are stored on a secure computer system and can only be accessed by your physician and other medical staff who need it to care for you. National Jewish strictly follows HIPAA guidelines for ensuring your patient information is protected. Read a notice of our privacy practices.
