Respiratory Fit Protection Services Provided Throughout Kansas City Area with National Jewish, Boyer Safety Services Agreement

DENVER-National Jewish Medical and Research Center today announced an agreement with Boyer Safety Services Inc. of Liberty, Mo., to provide highly-specialized "fit testing" services to hospital medical center employees around the Kansas City area.

Using innovative technology developed at National Jewish, Boyer Safety will fit test masks for healthcare professionals to protect against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The National Jewish technology is the subject of a pending U.S. patent application.

National Jewish’s fit testing procedure ensures that a worker has the correct mask size, that the mask fits the face with no gaps and that the person knows how to position the mask on the face. Testing involves placing the mask over the nose and mouth, and then being exposed to a bitter or sweet tasting mist. If the mist can be tasted, the mask needs to be fitted more closely to the face.

In addition to on-site fit testing of medical staff, National Jewish and Boyer Safety plan to enter into additional relationships to provide safety training classes that include a fit test and an OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) refresher course that focuses on personal airborne pathogen protection.

Boyer Safety will use a device designed by members of National Jewish’s Division of Occupational and Environmental Health, which is led by Lee Newman, MD The device consists of an air compressor attached to an automated aerosol release system.

National Jewish’s system dramatically reduces the time and costs required to comply with federal regulations for fit testing employees, the potential for technician stress injury by eliminating the squeeze bulb action and the variability in delivery of test solution from tester to tester, which may introduce errors into the testing procedure.
