Pulmonary Hypertension: Lifestyle Management

While pulmonary hypertension has no cure, it can be managed with lifestyle adjustments combined with medical treatment. Stay in close contact with your doctor and inform him if any symptoms seem to worsen. Rapid weight gain can be a sign of worsening symptoms, so weigh yourself regularly.

Other important lifestyle changes include:

  • Stop smoking. Smoking worsens pulmonary hypertension (PH) symptoms. Quitting smoking can make the condition much more manageable. Avoid secondhand smoke as well.
  • Maintain a healthy diet. You may need to limit the amount of sodium, cholesterol, saturated fats, and trans fats in your diet because they can clog arteries and weaken the heart. You might also need to regulate your consumption of anything with Vitamin K (found in leafy green vegetables) which interacts with blood-thinning medications. ,
  • Exercise. Regular physical activity--such as biking, walking, or jogging--can help keep your heart, muscles, and lungs healthy. Avoid activities that cause breathing problems, dizziness, or chest pain. Your doctor can help you structure a workout routine that fits your personal needs and interests.
