Disease Management Staff Biographies

David Tinkelman, MD, Vice President - Health Initiatives

Dr. Tinkelman completed his undergraduate work at Temple University and followed with medical school at Hahnemann Medical College, both in Philadelphia. He served his residency in pediatrics at the St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1974 he began his fellowship training program at National Jewish Hospital in Denver, Colorado. Upon completion of his training programs, Dr. Tinkelman successfully completed his board examinations in Pediatrics and in Allergy and immunology. He then moved to Atlanta, where he practiced Medicine until 1995.

During this 19 years Dr. Tinkelman was in private practice with the Atlanta Allergy Clinic and also was Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics in the Section of Allergy and Immunology at the Medical College of Georgia. While in Atlanta he served as President of the Allergy and Immunology Society of Georgia and the American Lung Association of Atlanta. In September, 1995 he returned to Denver, as Vice President of Health Initiatives at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center.

Dr. Tinkelman is a past president of the Joint Council of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology. He was previously Section Chairman of the Section of Allergy and Immunology of the Academy of Pediatrics and is the current Chairman of the Asthma Guidelines Project for the Asthma Action Plan. He is a member of the Pulmonary Disease Advisory Panel for the United States Pharmacopeia. He has been editor of the Journal of Asthma for the last nine years and has served on the editorial boards for several other journals.

Dr. Tinkelman is author of more than 100 published scientific articles, scholarly reviews, and book chapters. In addition, he has been the co-editor of three textbooks related to pediatric, allergic and asthmatic conditions. While maintaining a management position at National Jewish, Dr. Tinkelman continues to maintain his clinical interest by seeing patients in the Pediatric Clinic at National Jewish. His primary clinical interest centers around the management of childhood asthma. His professional goals are to meld the standards of academic excellence, optimal medical care with the goals of managed healthcare delivery systems.

Philip R. Corsello, MD, FCCP, MHA, Medical Director - Disease Management Programs

Dr. Corsello is Medical Director of National Jewish Disease Management Programs. He is a board-certified pulmonologist with over 30 years experience in the treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). He is the Associate Medical Director of the National Jewish Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program (PRIDE). His extensive experience in pulmonary rehabilitation dates back to his having been a co-investigator with Dr. Thomas Petty in the early pilot projects in pulmonary rehabilitation conducted at the University of Colorado Denver in the late 1960's. He is the author of numerous publications focusing on COPD.

Dr. Corsello is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and completed his fellowship in pulmonary disease at the University of Colorado. He engaged in a small group private practice of pulmonary medicine, much of it critical care medicine, for nearly fifteen years prior to joining a large, capitated multi-specialty medical group in southern California in 1981. In 1985 he returned to Colorado as a faculty member at the National Jewish Center, and has thus had extensive experience in no less than three healthcare delivery systems.

Dave Bellamy, MA, BS, Director Clinical Telecommunications Center

Dave Bellamy is responsible for the overall operations of all areas of the NJC Clinical Telecommunication Center. This includes our call center operations for NJC’s Lung Line, Smoking Cessation’s QuitLines, and Disease Specific Case Management programs.  Lung Line serves callers from all across the county.  The QuitLine services are provided primarily for caller from the states of Colorado, Ohio, Montana and Idaho.  The Disease Management services are provided to patients with respiratory conditions and are referred to us by representatives from various Health Plans throughout the country.

Mr. Bellamy brings 25 years of management experience in Health Care, including his most recent previous position as Director of all the Kaiser Permanente contact centers in Colorado.  These included call centers in Customer Service, Appointment and Medical Advice, Language Interpretations Services, and the Claims and Referral Systems.

Mr. Bellamy obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Health Care Management and a Master’s Degree in Organizational Management.  He was also worked for several years in the clinical areas of Radiology as a Registered Radiologic Technologist and a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, as well as management in non health care related fields.

Mr. Bellamy currently serves on several community boards, including Families First of Colorado, a non-profit organization in the fight against child abuse that operates a children’s shelter in Denver.  Through parenting classes and workshops, Families First brings dysfunctional families back together.

National Jewish Medical and Research Center is extremely proud of the specialized expertise and experience our disease management program nurses provide to our clients. All nurses at National Jewish have additional or specialized training in asthma and respiratory disease. Our Care Managers have among them an average of 25 years as an RN and of those, an average length of time spent in a clinical setting of 20 years.

National Jewish Care Managers rely on their experience and skill to provide outstanding support and education to our clients and their members.

They have a combined average of 25 years nursing experience, average of 20 years experience in a clinical setting and 30% have worked in National Jewish patient care setting before working in disease management.
