Eosinophilic Esophagitis: Principles and Practice

Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), a disorder characterized by a dense esophageal eosinophilia that occurs in association with upper gastrointestinal symptoms, is increasing in prevalence in the United States and is often under-diagnosed or misdiagnosed. This meeting will provide an update to physicians and healthcare professionals on the cutting-edge research, diagnostic techniques and novel treatments for the pediatric patient population. It will allow practitioners to provide better care for patients suffering from EoE.

Pediatricians, Family Medicine Physicians, Allergists, Gastroenterologists, Pathologists, Nutritionists and Dietitians, Feeding Specialists (Occupational and Speech Therapists), Physician Assistants, Nurses and other Allied Health Professionals.

Learning Objectives

After attending this workshop the participant should be able to

  1. Distinguish eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when presented with patient case histories and histological findings.
  2. Identify potential complications of EoE.
  3. Describe the endoscopic and histological characteristics required for the diagnosis of EoE.
  4. Discuss the role of allergy testing (skin testing and laboratory evaluation) in the evaluation of children with suspected EoE.
  5. Identify appropriate treatment options for patients with EoE.
  6. List the common nutritional concerns identified in children with EoE.
  7. Discuss the feeding difficulties encountered in some children with EoE.
  8. Review the psychological issues often faced by children with EoE and their families.
