Why did you become an Education Media Specialist?
I love kids, and I love teaching them new concepts. My favorite thing about being around kids is that they always seem to have LOTS of energy and they love to learn! I decided to become an Education Media Specialist at Kunsberg because I wanted to be able to teach kids while using great technology tools. Kunsberg has given me the opportunity to learn and grow while being around kids and wonderful people, and I love it!

What is it like to work at Kunsberg?
Being a part of Kunsberg is like being welcomed into a wonderful family. We have the one who will pick on you no matter what, the family members who are always there to take care of you, the one who won't stop talking about the Broncos, and all the others who are constantly helping me grow. The kids are wonderful too! I love it when they come into the library just to chat and see how my day is going.

Where did you go to school and when?
I went to a small school my whole life—almost like Kunsberg. I graduated high school in Michigan with a class of only 54! Then, I moved to Indiana where I attended Indiana Wesleyan University. I graduated with a double major in Elementary and Exceptional Needs Education with an emphasis on Mild to Moderate Interventions in December of 2007. I am currently working on my Master's in Information Learning Technologies from the University of Colorado, Denver.

How did you find out about Kunsberg?
I moved to Colorado in 2008 and lived with some good family friends. A friend of the girl I was staying with worked at National Jewish Health and told me they had openings at the school. From the moment I learned about Kunsberg, I knew it was a place where I wanted to work!

What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I love to go up into the mountains to hike and explore. I'm always amazed at the beauty of the mountains because in Michigan we don't have any! I love to read a great book, and I also like to meet new people, which is why I do a lot of volunteer work.

What is your favorite teaching story?
My first year at Kunsberg I was able to teach a first grade literacy class. As I was teaching them different letter patterns in words, I had one student raise his hand and say "Miss Katie, We LOVE words!" I thought that was so precious to see how much he loved learning.

What is your education and work history?
I graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in December of 2007. I've had numerous jobs that involve kids: I've been a Program Director for a before/after school care, a camp counselor, a special needs camp counselor, and a lead teacher of a nursery program. I love being around kids, so I usually take any opportunity that comes my way to be involved with their learning process.
