Cardiothoracic Radiology Division Fellowships

The cardiothoracic radiology fellowship program is a 1 year joint training program with National Jewish Health (NJH) and the ACGME-accredited University of Colorado Denver (UCD) Diagnostic Radiology Residency. UCD is the main academic and teaching institution for the Rocky Mountain Region and NJH ranked as the top respiratory hospital in the country are teaming up to offer this one-year fellowship. This fellowship offers extraordinary opportunities for continued learning, research and clinical interactions, designed to develop broad-based expertise in all forms of non-invasive cardiothoracic imaging and image processing.

At NJH there is a diverse population of outpatients with respiratory and cardiac disease, while at University of Colorado Denver Health Sciences Center (UCDHSC) there is a general population of patients requiring chest imaging studies, with particular emphasis on thoracic oncology, and cardiothoracic surgical issues. Upon completion of the program, fellows will be able to image all forms of chest and cardiovascular disease with appropriate tools and to answer clinical questions with confidence, a great degree of expertise and freedom.

Faculty and Interests

The thoracic radiology section is internationally recognized for its expertise, and enjoys an equally high local reputation. The position offers daily interaction with a world-renowned cadre of radiologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, thoracic oncologists, and thoracic surgeons. The faculty members include Drs. David Lynch(Program Director), John Armstrong, Debra Dyer, Kavita Garg, Valerie Hale, John Newell, Robert Quaife, Joyce Schroeder, Howard Weinberger and Hakan Sahin. We have leadership roles in several multicenter studies, including NLST, COPDGene and IPFNet. Areas of interest of our group include interstitial lung disease, airways disease, asthma, emphysema, quantitative lung imaging, cardiology and screening for lung cancer. We have funded research projects in all of these areas. There is an image analysis laboratory and access to patient databases at NJH for research purposes.

Conferences and Mentorship

The fellow will participate actively in multi-disciplinary conferences dealing with pulmonary medicine, cardiothoracic surgery, interstitial lung disease, mycobacterial disease, occupational medicine and radiologic-pathologic correlation. Mentorship will be provided for completion of a research project, and travel to a national meeting will be supported.

Library Facilities

Library services and facilities are available through both institutions. Fellows have privileges at the Health Sciences Library at University of Colorado Denver-Anschutz Medical Campus and the Tucker Medical Library at National Jewish Health. Between the two libraries, fellows have online access to all major radiology journals, some electronic books, medical databases, and STATdx Radiology. Both facilities are conducive to quiet study and research, including WiFi connections for laptops. Librarians are available to consult on computerized MEDLINE searching and other publications issues. Article linking and full document delivery services are available. The National Jewish Health Imaging Department's own library compliments these services with a comprehensive selection of imaging books, journals and teaching files.
