Clinical Interests
Psychological factors in pediatric respiratory and allergic disorders (asthma, atopic dermatitis, food allergy eosinophilic esophagitis), management of chronic illness, children's psychosocial adjustment to illness, parenting problems and parent counseling, behavior problems in young children.
Clinically, I have worked throughout my career with children with chronic illness and their families. I have developed a conceptualization for understanding growing children's increasing ability to participate in and then manage their illness, while their parents shift to increasingly less involvement. I help families to minimize the negative impact of illness, and also to recognize ways in which family interaction patterns are exacerbating the illness, so that children and families can have the best quality of life possible. My research has focused on the same issues, as I have worked to understand how family functioning impacts both the onset and persistence of childhood asthma. I have conducted a multi-faceted intervention with low-income families of wheezy infants with the goal of reducing persistent asthma and/or decreasing its severity. I conducted a home-based counseling intervention aimed at reducing cigarette smoke exposure for children with asthma who are exposed to cigarette smoke in the home.
