Appreciation for Excellent Training Inspires Gift Annuity

Dr. Antonio J. Simoes was born in Roriz-Barcelos, Portugal. After attending medical school in Portugal, Dr. Simoes did his surgical residency at New York Hospital. He met Francis Dowiak during his residency. He fell in love, and was determined to marry Francis and stay in the United States with her, despite his expiring visa.

Dr. Simoes learned that his friend, Dr. Melvin Newman, was starting a cardiac surgery unit at National Jewish. (The cardiac surgery unit at National Jewish Health performed groundbreaking procedures for two decades until it was closed in 1968. National Jewish Health reentered the practice of noninvasive cardiology in 2006.)

Dr. Simoes was offered the first residency of this program, and he jumped at the opportunity. Francis followed him to Denver, and they were soon married. They spent two wonderful years (1960-1962) and had Elizabeth, their first child, in Denver.

"I was so fortunate to work at National Jewish Health," said Dr. Simoes, "where the quality of doctors is so incredible and the care for the patients unparalleled. I will never forget how appreciative the patients were for the care they received regardless of race, religion or financial status."

After Dr. Simoes's residency the couple moved to Francis's hometown, Landsdale, Pennsylvania, where Dr. Simoes started his own practice. Through the years, he remembered the fantastic training he received at National Jewish, and how much they did for their patients.

Recently, he decided to make a significant gift to show his appreciation, and funded a $100,000 charitable gift annuity. He feels great about giving back to National Jewish Health, and he also appreciates the fact that he receives a guaranteed fixed and annual income of 8.8 percent or $8,800 ($2,200/qtr).  In addition he receives a charitable deduction of $48,665.

"I am so glad to be in a position to support National Jewish Health, which so influenced my life and which continues to influence so many lives."
